STEPHANE ROLLAND COMMITS TO ENVELOPING VOLUMES
By Ford Leland
Paris, France – Fluttering by like a dream in the wake of his Spanish muse’s pulsing canter, Stephane Rollande’s Winter 2013 collection is a full commitment to enveloping volumes. Pluming out like the sensuous form of an exotic orchid, this season’s pieces vacillate between ethereal floating satins and rigid sculptural silks.
An ominous palette of midnight blue, starlit black, and perfect white establish a virtuous air of 1500s Spanish royalty, also present in the conservative cuts of the collection. Strict lines crop the body starting in high collars and continuing all the way down to ankles and wrists. However, layers slowly begin to peel back exposing bare flesh through cut outs and sheer veils. In some silhouettes, sharply angled vinyl has grown to jut out like elegant patterns of broken glass, which contrasts the fluidity of long sleeves that trail like the fins of a butterfly koi. As alluring as she may be, the Stephane Rolland woman is powerful and not to be trifled with this season.
