YIQING YIN

Dive deep. Ringing ears. Cold pressure. Ribs Crack. Aquatic secrets flash past. Soul escapes. Peace at last

By Ford Ledand

Paris, France – This season, Yin proposes an intimate glimpse of life in an oceanic graveyard. As the submerged female corpse adapts to its surroundings, wafts of thin membrane grow into an enveloping cocoon that propel her through the current. Once discovered by her new community, sprawling jellyfish and families of corral reef sculpt elaborate designs around her form in homage to its alien beauty. Consumed by salt-water mysteries, she becomes one with the gentle beings who populate this world that so few have explored.

Using everything from silks to reflective plastics, Yin constructed her visions this season through a series of dresses in tones of sand, red corral, and gray clamshell. Owning a style reminiscent of both Alexander McQueen and Iris Van Herpen, this young couture designer continues to impress with her innovative designs season after season. Though some pieces of this collection teetered on the edge of being too literal in their references, it was powerful as a whole. The first three pieces were particularly strong in that they so aptly captured the lightness of the inspiration. The final two pieces are also seasonal favorites. For a young designer with limited support and resources, Yiqing Yin is still managing to outshine much of her competition.
