Milan, Italy – The matriarch of British fashion, Vivienne Westwood, presented her new Fall Winter 2016/17 collection in Milan. In it we find a work that is replete with signature British styles.
Well-known for gender-bending, punk rock chic and fine tailoring, the house of Westwood took us there this season with their extravagant style. The new work has an energetic selection of prints, colors, details and garments to keep one in a state of excitement. The clothes range from suits, jackets, shirts, sweaters, high-waisted skinny trousers, voluminous pants, shredded knitwear and the androgynous one-shoulder gowns. The checked or pinstriped coats and suits fall nearly to classical lengths. And we do find some well tailored suits that are kept close to the body. However we also notice the introduction of the very boxy cuts in other suits.
The color scheme for Autumn/Winter 2016/17 is rather subdued, with some shiny satin. The accessories used are necklaces, scarfs, wool socks, wristbands, London print belts and many interesting shoes. Some of the shoes even high platforms.
Perish the thought of a toned down work. The majority of the garments scream with a rebel yell by the usage of color, patterns and mismatched ideas. The exaggerated and experimental vibes of fashion from the 1980’s and 1990’s are still in the air. Westwood breaks all the rules related to matching colors and forms. Funky kitsch is still her thing.
