Paris, France – This season designer Boucha Jarrar debut her first collection for Lanvin at Paris Fashion Week and as the house’s new artistic director. After the house’s 14 years of domination by former artistic director Alber Elbaz and a single season with no head designer, it was time for a fresh breeze to arrive at French fashion house.
As the first silhouettes hit the catwalk, it became quite clear that the ideas of Jarrar would be easy fits into the life of the Lanvin woman. Her approached is slightly more avant-garde than that which Alber Elbaz was known for during his long and very successful reign as Lanvin’s artistic director.
Many of the designs look like they are made for upper-class corporate balls. We find a white satin ruched gown, a black satin dress cut to skim the body, an asymmetric ivory dress with black sash and sandals with diamanté chain-mail cuff – amongst others. Classic glamour is the overall theme of the Spring/Summer 2017 collection, which comes from the roots. According to Jarrar, Jeanne Lanvin’s own legacy is her main inspiration.
It is interesting to see how Jarrar brings classic glamour into the collection, while giving it a modern twist to suit the strong business woman. We spotted long négligée slip dresses, lacy peignoirs, long ivory satin gowns and tuxedo jackets with chiffon transparencies. “I was exploring paths of sensuality and intimacy”, Jarrar explains. She plays with the revealing and unveiling the silhouette of the female body. The looks get their final touch with sparkly accessories, tasseled anklets and long lavalier necklaces, jewelled bags, strips of lame fur and zebra prints in crackled patent leather.
Even though Jarrar took a new twist with Lanvin, the fashion house is very satisfied with the collection. And of this the fashion house’s C.E.O. went on record saying, “Her timeless style is in keeping with the style and the values of our company”.
Even though we love the somewhat more eccentric designs of Elbaz, the quality of the designs by Jarrar cannot be denied. We are ready to see more timeless class Lanvin!
