Paris, France – Say what you like and think what you want, but it appears that Mashama just seemingly cannot do one thing: FAIL AT DOING A GREAT COLLECTION. Since its debut in Paris two years ago, this house has been extremely consistent with the way it conceives and executes its ideas. I don’t think that anyone appreciates those efforts more so than this difficult writer today.
Ok so by now we are all pretty darn tired of seeing the domination of craze that the fashion world seems to have with ruffles this season. Let’s be clear. Mashama does toss in a quick look or two such as the elegant amply cut painter’s blouse with ruffles. And they do appear on the sleeves of a couple of blazers and even on a skirt or two. But that’s just to say that Mashama knows how to read well a good trend and take advantage of it. But the buck stops there. And that’s just where the house’s own irrepressible ideas spring forth.
This writer has a true appreciation for Mashama ‘s unique shoulder work this season. Hers are boxy and architectural. I love the inclusion of a bit of fishnet, the voluminous trousers, the vivid colors, etc. The lengths of the blazers this season are dramatically longer. They all fit so well together with the proportion of the pants. And the house adds six very real and very visible utility pocket on the pants.
When one takes into account the full entirety of the new Mashama Spring/Summer 2017 collection, one has to appreciate its distinctions vis-à-vis the other rising and established names in the Paris fashion world. While quite a lot of them took the easy way out by too heavily relying upon the hot ruffles trend, this particular house acknowledges it in few respectful ways. And from there it goes on its own to unashamedly and aesthetically forge a very different path.
