Paris, France – This season something very different is going on in the mind of the grand couturier, Alexis Mabille. The Frenchman gathered us all together at the Hotel d’Evreux situated at Place Vendôme for the presentation of what upon first look seems to be a very new look from what we are used to.
Alexis Mabille is not really known for a massive use of bold colors. When he does use strong colors, it but traditionally is a single one at a time such a red. And even then it is used with great moderation. So upon seeing his new body of work, many of us asked, “Am I at the right show?” or “Did I stumble into the wrong room“?
These questions resulted because quite simply put, we are not used to seeing so many BOLD colors in the work of Alexis Mabille. This new Spring/Summer 2017 collection has the strong hues that the grand couturier has ever used collectively in a single collection. Of course there are the powdery notes that he has worked with in the past such as the powdery blue, pastel pinks, yellow, white and of course black. But we were totally thrown off course when we saw the inclusion of such colors fuchsia, deep purple, mystical tangerine, royal blue and a very, very sinful red !
After the initial shock imposed by Alexis Mabille’s choice of color palette, we discover that the codes that define his work are well present: the sheath gown shapes, the belted waistlines, the bows and the tuxedo lapel-like embellishments. They’ve been created with silk crepe, chiffons, silk tulles, organza, lace, etc. However the most surprising aspect of this particular collection (beyond the colors) is the inclusion of so many crystals. The way that they are employed seems a bit forced and so foreign…
