New York City (NY), USA – For Fall Winter 2017/18, designer Prabal Gurung decides to honor the women that inspire him. He uses his collection as a sort of love letter. In it he speaks of how he envisions the women that he dresses for the special occasions as well as the challenges that they may face in their everyday lives.
“Today I bring to you the women who inspire me – those made of strength, inner beauty, graceful femininity and vigilance”, declared the designer. “We are awake, alive and inspired to celebrate women from all walks of life. This is the time to speak our conviction and use our voices to invoke change. This is the upside of the downside. Femininity has not one definition and this fall begins with a question – ‘What does it mean to say a woman should ‘dress like a woman?’… This is my love letter to you, our woman, who inspires us to present our unabashed and unapologetic definition of femininity with a bite.”
In expressing these sentiments, Prabal Gurung is working with rich materials that include cashmere, lace, wool, fur, etc. as well as other embellishing materials such as crystals. He works them into resolutely feminine shapes and silhouettes that are dominated by sensible, yet sexy dresses, two-piece skirts sets and pants ensembles. The looks are done in floral prints and finished with large, oversized coats.
Prabal Gurung ‘s collection must be considered to be a hit. It is feminine, well-conceived and executed from start to finish. Done in wonderfully wintry materials, perhaps its greatest attribute may be considered to be the relative ease with which clients will be able to understand and appreciate the work this season. This is the reason for which women so readily identity with Prabal Gurung ‘s vision of feminine attire.
