Paris, France – Continuing to throw caution to the air and it middle finger up to conservatism, French haute couture house Schiaparelli has broken new ground. It’s Fall Winter 2017/18 collection skilfully combines color, embroideries and “out there” ideas into a cohesive whole.
As Madame Elsa Schiaparelli adored to find herself in the presence of artists, so has the new collection taken on that spirit. The work sees silk tulle, organza, crystals and velvet woven together into seductive silhouettes that maintain a sense of humor. There is a deliberate play on the opposition of solid materials and light bearing materials. In some dresses we see this opposition establishing itself, but in a way that makes the Schiaparelli woman elegant, yet not too cautious as she seeks to be carefree.
She calls upon pleated materials, embroideries, and glass tubes as she constructs ornate images on the materials as well as geometric and optimistic embellishments such as a happy sunshine in black. Puzzle pieces add to this as if to say we are constructing something here that could be the woman’s identity. And the house adds in the favored red hearts and fetish red lips as if in efforts to remind us all of the modern Schiaparelli woman’s soul still being deeply rooted in that of its illustrious founder.
