Paris, France – Last evening the legendary French fashion house announced that it had negotiated a contact that results in Olivier Lapidus being appointed as its new artistic director. This literally comes just days after the house pretty much fired the former grand couturier Bouchra Jarrar from the very same post. When a house does this, disappointing sales is generally the culprit behind such decisions as this. During Jarrar’s three season tenure plus one season designed by Lanvin’s design’s studio in the immediate aftermath of Alber Elbaz’s ouster, the house experience a 23% drop in sales between 2015 to the end of the first quarter of 2017.
Madame Shaw-Lan Wang, President of Lanvin also went on record and commented on the appointment, “I welcome Olivier Lapidus as Lanvin artistic director whose creative capacity is in direct line with the elegance embodied by Jeanne Lanvin, says His broad understanding of the universe of this house, of the world of fashion and design and his resolutely modern approach will bring Lanvin towards new horizons. »
“Far ahead of his time, Olivier Lapidus has always been interested in new technologies. As a precursor couturier, he now resonates with the aspirations of the company and will be able to take up the challenges of Lanvin in the 21st century” explains Madame Wang.
“It is a great honor to join Lanvin and I warmly thank Madame Wang for placing her confidence in me”, says Olivier Lapidus. He went on to say, “With nearly 130 years of history, Lanvin is the oldest French couture house. To ensure its longevity is an immense task and an exciting challenge.”
Some consider Olivier Lapidus to be a relative unknown outsider. And though this writer knows this to be far from the truth, his appointment still comes a general surprise to most of us. However it does make great sense in view of the fact that he is a pioneer in e-couture services, a path in which Lanvin is rumored to be destined to take. And his skills as a bona-fide couturier are only adding to the rumors that the house will once again pursue the path of haute couture!
Olivier Lapidus is both the son of the former grand couturier Ted Lapidus and the nephew of the grand couturier Madame Rose Torrente-Mett, founder of the legendary house of Torrente Haute Couture. For many years, he headed designs at his father’s house before launching into his own activities.
Ted Lapidus will present his first collection for Lanvin during the next round of the Paris Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2018.
