ZIAD NAKAD OVERWHELMS THE SENSES

Paris, France – It is at the Hotel Westin in the rue Castiglione and just off of the famed Place Vendôme in Paris where the Lebanese couturier Ziad Nakad continues to increase his international profile. Already a solid reference in the world of couture in Lebanon, the designer literally overwhelmed and overpowered our senses with the presentation of his new collection for Fall Winter 2017/18.
Ziad Nakad opened the presentation of his new collection with his sumptuous crystal-studded wedding gown. This off-the-shoulder creation has a small V panel removed at the bust. From the form-fitting bodice flows the bell-shaped lower portion of the gown. Done in silk, its materials are embroidered with thousands of crystals and pearls.
From there a procession of beautifully made gowns would be worn by some of the most lovely models in Paris. While silks, chiffons, tulles and organzas would share in the excitement, it is the velvet that proves to be the most compelling individual material in the collection. It would have a much-needed calming and soothing effect on the overall collection.
Ziad Nakad’s collection is the perfect example of how too much excess can kill an otherwise flawless performance. His relentless dependency on flashy crystals becomes too much. This is not a one-time misstep. They are fine in the beginning, but after the first ten heavily crystal-charged looks, the presentation tends to slow down and to linger on FOREVER LASTING!This has consistently been the observation of his work since he began showing in Paris.
Taken one by one, each of Ziad Nakad’s gowns is exquisite in its own right. However, the endless amounts of blinding flash overpowers this senses. This sensory overload adversely affects artistic perception of the collection in the sense that it prevents one from seeing (or stops one cold from being able to appreciate) the individuality of each look in this otherwise near irreproachable body of work.
We understand fully that Ziad Nakad must first cater to his existing clientage. However if he wishes to attract a wider clientele from other countries and of ladies that travel to Paris for the couture season, then he has no choice but to add more subtle nuances to his work. He should start by understanding that couture is not about uselessly distracting and blinding bling.
Bling in couture is just like sun on the beach. But even sunglight burns it you get too much. If he is wise and willing to adapt, he will quickly learn that subtlety can be his friend and serve him just as well as it has over the years for the host of other talented couturiers from his native Lebanon. And if he does this, his is a career that should last over many decades and become just as famous as the Lebanese designers who are considered as haute couture pioneers from his region of the world.
