Riga, Latvia – Georgian designer Mariam Gvasalia, who has previously shown at Tiblisi Fashion Week, brought her latest collection to Riga. She’s one of the breakout young talents of the hot Georgian fashion scene, and her collection for the Fall Winter 2017/18 season presents ideas that play on volume and texture with the use of shiny silks, heavy brocades and clear plastics. Plastic provided the most polarizing looks, with a white covering over a red slip dress looking futuristic and flowing while a clear top with dropped sleeves came across as oddly staid and stiff.
Mariam Gvasalia ‘s ideas of volume also work well in other pieces, jackets tied with wide obi-inspired belts and a gilded brocade pantsuit, while a series of sequin stripe dresses, skirts and a suit had fit issues and could have benefitted from more structure. Her work will only improve as she finds more balance between structure and soft fluidities.
As usual, her accessories are a standout. Though she didn’t show her velvet and lame trainers in this collection, at next day re-sees they inspired lust in many an editor.
