Paris, France – Each season the Chinese couturier Guo Pei continues to impress us with her work. Through each collection we consistently find ourselves drawn to the crossroads where imagination, skill, technique, history, culture and passion meet. The Fall Winter 2018/19 haute couture season in Paris provides us with yet another occasion to discover more about her, her life and her work. After sitting for the presentation of Madame Pei’s recent fashion show in Paris, there is but one word to describe her latest opus: INSPIRATIONAL !
There have been times when Guo Pei’s work has lost us in its creative results. True, haute couture is about artistry. But it is also supposed to be about dressing the most refined women in the world as well. The theatrical beauty of her work has confused us at times in the past and has even left us with the occasional question mark. But not this time! In her new Fall Winter 2018/19 haute couture collection, she has skilfully married her passion for architecture with the work of the atelier and the practical needs of her clients. This results in her best work to date.
Quo Pei has combined beautiful Chinese silks, tulles and modern laces into silhouettes with structure and fluidity. Each one has stunning architectural images shown in someway or another. A look composed of a bustier top and a floor length – line skirt resembles an extremely intricate, multi-tiered pyramid. One of the most amazing looks is a black dress whose back is designed as curtains on a theatre stage. Each silhouette is embellished with ornate handmade embroideries and at times delicate ostrich feathers as a counter to the structure of the architectural lines.
During show, we experienced strong emotions. They were occasioned by the realization of the individual levels of imagination, skill and the hundreds of hours that went into the creation of this body of work. It leaves one speechless…!
