New York City (NY), USA – Philipp Plein has made yet another huge step in his global strategy to have his brand known the world over. The “Cool King of Bling” invaded New York Fashion Week and made one of the splashiest entries ever known in the fashion circles of the Big Apple.
In his debut at the New York Fashion Week, Philipp Plein did what he does so well. He imagined a powerful staging for the presentation of his new women’s collection for Fall Winter 2017/18 season. With that he also took it upon himself to introduce new additions to the men’s line that he officially showed in Milan just weeks ago. He chose the former felony-heartthrob turned model Jeremy Meeks to open the show in his very first catwalk appearance. And as a tip of the hat to what many consider to be socially and politically uncomfortable times in the United States, Plein tapped the legendary 1990’s Miami bass group 2 Live Crew to perform its smash hit, “Banned in the USA“.
Philipp Plein intends for this debut to be a true hommage to the iconic city. So the models took to the catwalk at the landmark New York Public Library as the Brooklyn-born star Nas performed live. We see them clad in street gear, crystal encrusted and metallic studs embellished pieces. Plein put forth his down jackets, leather pants, parkas, T-shirts, hi-tops and blinged out track suits. So in essence he gave us what we want and expect from his brand. However, there are a couple of missteps…
The animal rights group PeTA has a strong presence in New York City. Its member must surely have lost their minds and flipped their synthetic weaves upon seeing Plein’s distinctionless mix of streetwear and couture that includes intarsia mink coat, the boots with chinchilla heels, crocodile skins and other furs ! But the biggest faux pas in this otherwise exciting collection comes in the form of the evening gowns and formal dresses. This is clearly a weakness for Plein as he has not previously demonstrated a talent for or even a serious interest in doing such attire for women.
