Riga, Latvia – In the new Dalood collection for Fall Winter 2017/18, we find soft dresses with the tough lace-up leather boots. They summarize the contrast of ladylike power dressing imagined presented by the house’s artistic director. Indeed the boot unites much of the collection of grounding looks from oversized skirt suits to mini dresses to sleek pantsuits. The velvet version is a particular highlight.

Dresses are the strong suit here, with the opening floral look, a bright turquoise dress with a contrasting black pussy-bow and a sunset sky sequined gown highlights. A black velvet pantsuit is also well-tailored and flows.

Dalood ‘s more experimental looks, including the reversed tops and jackets with the buttons in the back, are where the designer missed the mark. The trick of the oversized silhouette is to keep the excess fabric from translating into bulk. And some of the skirts and trousers come across as too large for the slim models. Embroidery on a denim jacket is an example of the brand’s traditional strength, but we wanted the jacket to face the right way.
